Waverley CC 10th May 2026 Home - Won
Vagabonds CC edged a thriller against Waverley CC, defending 205 to secure a hard-fought 15-run victory in a game that swung back and forth throughout the chilliest of chilly afternoons in Bentworth. Securing the Vagabonds first win of the season in their first home fixture.

After being put in to bat, the Vagabonds innings never quite exploded early on, slipping to 37-2 after the dismissals of T Hutchins and J Harding. However, a crucial middle-order rebuild steadied things before the innings gathered momentum late on.

The standout contribution came from Mr Bootie, who anchored the innings superbly with a composed 60 from 51 balls, striking 11 boundaries at better than a run a ball. His knock provided the backbone of the total and allowed others to play around him. Useful support came from Ralph, while the lower order chipped in to drag the score beyond 200.

Despite losing wickets late in the innings — including a mini-collapse from 194-6 to 195-7 — Vagabonds still finished strongly on 205 from their 35 overs. Extras also played a big part, with 27 runs donated by the Waverley attack.

Waverley’s chase began steadily before the Vagabonds bowlers gradually tightened the screw. B Bulpitt set the tone brilliantly up top, delivering a miserly spell of 10 overs, 5 maidens, 28 runs and no wicket. Although he did not get a breakthrough, his control created pressure that the rest of the attack capitalised on.

J Wilson capped off an excellent all-round performance with the ball, ripping through the middle and lower order to finish with 4-31 from 6.3 overs. His spell included key wickets at crucial moments, particularly removing the dangerous S Brewer for 60 just as Waverley looked favourites.

T Gay also struck important blows with 2-30, including the wicket of M Carmichael after a fluent 27, while M Mitchell produced a decisive cameo spell with 2 wickets in just 2 overs to help break the back of the tail.

Waverley’s chase was driven by an aggressive 60 from S Brewer and a rapid unbeaten 34 from E Tucknott, but regular wickets prevented any sustained control of the chase. The turning point came during the middle overs as wickets fell steadily from 130-5 to 181-9, leaving the visitors with too much to do.

In the field, Vagabonds backed up the bowlers well under pressure. J Hardings lightning fast hands whipped off the bails to dismiss A Khan early, while sharp work behind the stumps and disciplined ground fielding helped keep the required rate climbing despite some late hitting.
Two catches from a hamstrung William including a sharp grab in the slips and a high steepler behind the stumps (contested by Cosmo who came off worse) were the highlights .

Eventually Waverley were bowled out for 190, sealing an excellent team win for the Vagabonds in a competitive and entertaining contest.
